WoW-Pro Leveling Addon: Leveling Speed

"Hey m8, how much /played you need to finish your guide?? From 30 to 60?? From 37 to 38???? Do you like ponies?!"

I get this question a lot (no, not the one about ponies). So I've decided to finally answer it once and for all.

I'll be using this blog entry to keep track of the leveling speed of each of the wow-pro leveling guide in addon format.

Everytime a section is 100% complete, tested and perfected, I'll run through it with a normal character, with no rested bonus and with no help from other characters (no twinking, powerlevel or anything).

For now, the only section which I consider 100% complete (by my standards) is the one I just released, for Maw's 1-12 Human Leveling Guide. See previous blog entry for more info.

List

  • Maw's Human 1-12 : 2h 54min (Level 12 and 78% done)
  • Maw's Human 12-20: 6h 10min (50 minutes per level on average)

You might think that 2h 54min to reach level 12 (almost 13 actually) is ok, but nothing special. But you have to take other things into account:

  • A lot of travelling was done in this chapter to prepare for the next chapters. The flight paths from Ironforge, Westfall and Thelsamar were picked up on the way. This will save a lot of time in the next chapter, and you'll see the results once I publish the next part.
  • No rested bonus, no twinking. I made a character on a new server so that he'll be on his own all the way to 80.
The aim is to see how fast one can level with the wow-pro addons, under the worst possible conditions. And so far it's very promising. Despite all those handicaps, we did almost 13 levels, with an average of 13min 40seconds per level.

And remember this time, if I can do it, anyone can. This time there's no advantage for me. I just blindly follow the addon, my knowledge of the circuits and the zones doesn't help me one bit in this case.

Here are a few screenshots of the Paladin I created to test the addon. Behold, Holyjame the retadin!

End of the guide - Level 12 (and 78%)

And that's it for now. Stay tuned for the adventure of Holyjame the retadin and his quest for leveling speed mastery!

Yeah, that's not the quickest I've seen but considering you picked up the FP's and even took time to take those screenshots (lol) it's pretty solid.

Can't wait to see the rest.

Go Holyjame! Smite the unholy on your way to glory and riches!
I've wondered this for a while too. But I also wonder about your addons, perhaps a post about them? (Unless I'm blind and there IS one that I just can't see).

I'm just wondering what you are doing for cash? Did you pick up a couple gathering professions? You will need to buy skills of course ;)

    Jame says:

Didn't pick a gathering skill. To make money I simply created a mule to which I mail the stuff I want to AH.

I'm mostly gonna make money off quest rewards and cloth.

Guess Holyjame will not be rich, but he'll be ok!

    Unknown says:

Makes sense, use what drops or you get from quests, everything else goes on the AH :)

I really wish you would work from 80 backwards to 1, not from 1-80. It's going to be a long, long time before I start yet another alt. It seems to me there's more "bang for the buck" catering to the higher levels first...

On a unrelated comment, I just started playing WoW again after my stay in Warhammer and I was wondering how long Wowpro will be down(I'm not able to connect to the site at all)? I've been playing since release and I've experienced everything WoW has to offer. I've AoE grinded, grinded, quested to 60, but yet your guides are always more effective!

    Keep up the good work!

    Jame says:

WoW-Pro was only down for 10 minutes. It's extremely rare but it happens.

    Seth says:

Jame first off thanks for all the hard work. These addons are way faster than having to look at the guide. But I felt like there were a lot of steps that could use cords and the tomtom arrow. A lot of the "get XX quest" didn't have an arrow. If I hadn't ever leveled a human I would be pretty lost looking for the marshal on the road out by Eastvale logging camp. I had to have the "paper/website" version up ready for me to check the maps to find several quest givers. Also the "get quest" steps in Dun Morogh were a pretty long distance to travel not knowing where your going.

The auto complete capabilities of this addon are great. After getting my human to level 12 I decided to level up a Draenei. There a lot of steps that needed to be clicked complete but I wasn't sure which ones needed to be clicked, so I spent a lot of time fussing with the guide looking at the next few steps. And there were even less arrows and cords in the Azuremist guide addon, but the website/paper maps are better.

Some suggestions for the addon. For get quest steps, make the step two lines, and put the quest givers name on the 2nd line. Also you could put the quest info on mouseover of the "get" step. I just need more info than just the quest name.

I've been following your guides since vanilla WoW, and while some of them discuss this topic, I was wondering if you could clarify - when's the best time to get bags? Obviously more bag space = more money and/or less time running back to town because you're full. But prior to having a high-level alt that can buy all your bags for you, it can get a little tricky to decide when the best time is to get a bigger bag without totally draining your cash, especially if the AH isn't being friendly. Any thoughts?

    Jame says:

    @Seth That's because you didn't install Lightheaded.

Without that addon you won't even have 50% of the TomTom arrows. It is clearly mentioned on the installation page that Lightheaded is required :P

    @Aidnan

When I start on a new server I simply make a human alt, leveling him up to level 6-8, pick up mining and then go mine some copper. Sells for about 7g a stack depending on your server. After that you can buy a bunch of 16-slot bags and you're set.

    Jame says:

@Seth About your suggestions. If you install Lightheaded there won't be a need for them at all.

With Lightheaded you'll get a TomTom arrow AND the name of the quest NPC under the arrow.

Also, there's no need to add a note for "get" quest, because there is an Icon code (pretty much like the color codes on my paper guides)

    ! = Get quest
    ? = Turn in quest

Every icon has a precise meaning, and notes are added only when it's necessary.

That way, people won't have to mouse over the tourguide bar for every single step.

So do you like ponies, Jame?

    Seth says:

oops, you are right! I did actually download lighthead, it just wasn't installed right. Had pull all the files out. I guess I didn't read the instructions thoroughly.

    Jame says:

    @Deea Ponies are the best!

    err.. whatever ^^

@Seth I suggest you try leveling another human now with Lightheaded correctly installed and you'll see the difference ;) Should be pure fun and relaxation!

    Unknown says:

    You should've called it Jameadin.

    Jame says:

Ahh, good point. I should have!

Should I pay 20 bucks for a namechange now? ^^

Your fast, I did the whole 1-12 guide with a human pala in 5h and 20min. Then i was afk around 20-30min also. So ill consider me as a normal leveler and you as a supernatural fast lvler.

    Unknown says:

Hey, if you wanna rename then I'll pay the $20 myself! <3

    Jame says:

Bah, nothing supernatural about it. I just stay focused the whole time, no afk, I set up my new skills / hotkeys while running to a next objective, etc.

    Hey Jame,
I've been using your guides to lvl my new mage and i must say I'm loving them easy to use and very fast!
I was just wondering, what add-ons do you use besides TomTom,Lighthead,Tour Guide?

    Aaron A. says:

I'm sure there's some guy on the Internet who's done it faster, probably because he was being escorted by a level 80 buddy just off-screen. I've done the 1-20 parts for every starting area (nine times in total), and I think my best time for 1-12 was just under five hours.

As for your idea to start a human alt and have him/her mine a few stacks of Copper, that also works well for Orcs and Trolls; Durotar has plenty of Copper nodes. If that gets boring, the Barrens aren't far off, and Deviate Fish sell nicely on the Auction House. Allies will usually pay more per fish, because it's not easy for Allies to get to the Barrens, let alone fish in peace for any length of time (not on PvP servers, anyway).

If you're willing to put up with the occasional ganking, though, there's good money in those lakes. If the raw fish sells for 1g each, if they average 30% of your catch, and if you can cast about three times per minute, you could earn 100g in two hours. That's enough for Netherweave Bags, training, and probably your first mount as well.

I'm excited to see what Holyjame can do!

I used the same guide with a Paladin and no professions but it took 3 hours and 36 mins and got me to lvl 13 1/4.
